Garbo's NYC Apt Listed
Â
I love looking at the photos in Halstead's listing of the famously reclusive Hollywood legend's elegant Manhattan refuge. Garbo bought the apartment in The Campanile, a high-end co-op building on Manhattan's upper east side in 1953 and it's now being sold by her family for $5.95 million. The walls of Garbo's Master Bedroom, as well as the headboard, are swathed with her favorite rose-hued Fortuny silk..divine. Can't you just picture her eating her breakfast in bed on a silver tray in such a fittingly elegant room?
The listing states that "she was drawn to this sprawling three bedroom, three bath aerie directly above the East River partly because the passing boats reminded her of her beloved, native Stockholm.".
Interesting facts about Garbo...she never married, retired from Hollywood at the ripe old age of 36 and was devoted to her health and fitness her entire life. When her family auctioned off her belongings in 2012, included in the trove were "her floral all-in-one yoga costume to the food scale and juicer she used in her kitchen".
